Using Steam with a VPN

Updated

Steam ties your store and its prices to your account and the way you pay, not to your IP address. A VPN comes into it when you keep one running for everything else, when you’re travelling, or when Steam is hard to reach on the network you’re on.

What changes with the VPN on

In SteamWith Bebra VPN
Store countryStays put. Your first purchase sets it, and it can change at most once every three months.
PricesRemain the prices of your account’s country, wherever you are.
Payment methodsMoving your store country takes a payment method from the new country, whatever address you connect from.
DownloadsTravel through the Bebra VPN server, so the country you pick affects speed.
Ping in online gamesUsually a little higher, because data covers an extra stretch of the route.

Steam on the road

Abroad, Steam still shows your home store, and a VPN address changes nothing there. When the location it sees doesn’t match your account, it may offer to switch your store country in the cart or at checkout. If you haven’t moved, decline. Wallet codes and game keys don’t change the country either.

Use the VPN when Steam won’t load on your network, and leave your store region alone. Russian speakers will find a separate page on Kazakh addresses and Steam (in Russian).

Setup and downloads

Steam and Bebra VPN both run on Windows, macOS and Linux. The app starts in a guest account, so if you paid with your email address, switch to it with Account → Sign out → Sign in with Email. The whole computer then goes through the VPN, Steam included, with nothing to configure in Steam itself.

If Steam opens fine without a VPN, disconnect for a big download. Otherwise pick a nearby country from Countries with the highest speed and set Steam’s download region, in the Downloads section of its settings, close to that country, because Steam’s files reach you through the Bebra VPN server there.

Steam and VPN questions

Can a VPN get me cheaper games on Steam?

No. Section 3.A of the Subscriber Agreement forbids disguising your country of residence, by IP proxy or any other method, and Valve may close the account of anyone who does.

Should I keep the VPN on for online games?

Only if a game or one of its services doesn’t work for you without it. If you do play through Bebra VPN, choose a country close to the game’s servers and the extra distance stays small.

Does Bebra VPN run on the Steam Deck?

Yes. The Linux version installs as an AppImage in SteamOS desktop mode. The Steam Deck page walks you through it.
