VPN for Linux

Bebra VPN ships for Linux in two forms. Ubuntu and Debian users get a DEB package that installs with apt. For Steam Deck and other setups there’s an AppImage, a single file that needs FUSE 2 and permission to run.

We don’t list other distributions as supported, but on x86-64 with systemd the AppImage may work. There are no ARM, 32-bit, RPM or Flatpak builds.

AppImage steps

Running the AppImage

  1. Install FUSE 2

The AppImage won’t start without it. The package is libfuse2 on Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12 and openSUSE, libfuse2t64 on Ubuntu 24.04 and Debian 13, and fuse2 on Arch.

  2. Make the file executable

In the folder with the file, mark it executable and start it. chmod +x Bebra.AppImage ./Bebra.AppImage

  3. Click a country

A fresh account has no subscription, so your first click opens Buy Bebra VPN. Once subscribed, Bebra asks to install its VPN adapter on the first connection. Agree and enter your administrator password, and the service is ready within 30 seconds.

Menu, tray and sign-in

If you installed the package, Bebra is in your application menu, and the Bebra command starts it from a terminal. There’s no sign-in screen on first launch, because the app creates a guest account for this computer.

If you already have a subscription, open Account → Sign out and choose Sign in with Email or Sign in with code. For the second one, the app has to be on your phone as well. Open Account → Sign in on another device there, then type the code it shows on the computer.

Closing the window sends Bebra to the tray, and the tunnel stays up. To start it with your session, tick Launch the app on system startup under Account → Settings.

Linux questions

Package or AppImage, if both would work?

The package. It gets network permissions during installation and builds the tunnel through NetworkManager by itself, with no separate service and no administrator password at connect time. The AppImage is for systems the package doesn’t install on.

The AppImage says “dlopen(): error loading libfuse.so.2”

FUSE 2 is missing. Install the package from the first step above and run the file again.

Which desktops has Bebra been tested on?

GNOME, KDE Plasma and Xfce. In GNOME the tray icon only appears with the AppIndicator extension. Ubuntu enables it by default, and Debian installs it separately.

Another VPN client gets in the way

Open your NetworkManager connections and switch off the VPN connections that belong to other apps. Then click the country again.
