Watch YouTube through a VPN

Updated

On a phone, computer or TV, Bebra VPN sends YouTube through a server in the country you pick. That helps when your network slows YouTube down or filters it, and when a video is limited to viewers in certain countries.

Phone, computer or TV

Phone and tablet

iPhone and iPad owners find Bebra VPN on the App Store. On Android it’s on Google Play, or you can download the APK from this site. The YouTube app on Android has a guide of its own.

Computer

Windows, macOS and Linux each get their own version of Bebra VPN, and it covers the whole system, so YouTube goes through the VPN in any browser. The desktop guide goes into the details.

TV

A TV needs Bebra VPN of its own, or Bebra VPN on your router. Android TV installs it from an APK file, Apple TV from the App Store. Either takes a one-time code that your phone shows under Account → Sign in on another device. A guest account’s code doesn’t work on Android TV, so link an e-mail first. Samsung and LG sets have no app, so they go through the router instead (Keenetic, OpenWrt or MikroTik).

Picking a country in the app

The main screen is a grid of flags, and there’s no separate Connect button. Tap a country and Bebra VPN connects to it, or shows the Buy Bebra VPN window first if you don’t have a subscription yet. A second tap on the lit tile disconnects.

For video, a country close to you is the safe choice, since every frame travels through that server. Fastest picks one for you, and Search finds a country by name. Once you settle on a country and keep coming back to it, the app adds it to Favorites by itself.

What the VPN changes, and what it doesn’t

Each Bebra location has several routes. The app picks one and switches to another by itself if it stops working.

YouTube places you in the server’s country. Some uploaders make a video available only in selected countries, usually for licensing reasons, and YouTube blocks other videos to comply with local law, according to YouTube’s help centre. The app can’t tell you in advance where a given video is allowed.

YouTube questions

Does the YouTube app go through the VPN too?

Yes, and so do YouTube Music, YouTube Kids and your browser. With split tunneling set to Off, which is how the app starts, all of the device’s traffic goes through the VPN.

Video uses a lot of data. Is there a cap?

No plan has one. Account → Statistics shows how much traffic you’ve used over the last 30 days.
